Safespill Ignitable Liquid Drainage Floor Assembly (ILDFA)
Principal: Safespill (USA)
Conventional hangar protection waits for a fuel fire, then floods the building with foam — damaging aircraft, creating a PFAS cleanup problem, and taking the facility out of service for days. Safespill takes the opposite approach: the floor itself removes the spilled fuel before it can ignite into a pool fire.
The system is a hollow extruded marine-grade aluminium floor with a perforated top surface. Spilled liquid drains instantly through the perforations into channels below, is carried to a trench system, and is routed to an oil-water separator or containment. If a spill does ignite, the assembly knocks the flame down rapidly. It uses only gravity, water and aluminium — no chemicals, no foam concentrate, no agent to store or replace.
Key Features
- Removes ignitable liquid before a pool fire can develop
- Chemical-free and PFAS-free — no AFFF, no high-expansion foam, no toxic runoff
- No risk of accidental foam discharge damaging aircraft or equipment
- Faster flame knockdown than foam-based alternatives
- Eliminates drip pans and the downtime associated with routine fuel spills
- No need to defuel aircraft before maintenance
- 50+ year design life with minimal maintenance and low lifecycle cost
- Modular trench design simplifies facility infrastructure
Applications Commercial and military aircraft hangars · MRO facilities · Helicopter hangars and helipads · Fuel handling and transfer areas · Ignitable liquid storage rooms (IBC and drum storage) · Vehicle and equipment maintenance workshops · Any facility where flammable liquid spill is the governing risk
Standards & Approvals Recognised in NFPA 409 (2022 Edition) as an equivalent to traditional foam-based systems for Group I and Group II hangars · FM Approved under Standard 6090 · Preferred fire protection method in FM Data Sheet 7-93 · Compliant with Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC)
